Watercolor and tempera on paper. Signed upper right: “Janeček/ 23. II. 45”.
This painting is a beautiful and rarely seen example of the influence Cubism had on the artist's early work. Ota Janeček was a major Czech painter, printmaker and illustrator. A member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists and Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists, He found inspiration in nature for his early, poetic series (Birds, Trees, Butterflies, Grasses). From the 1960s he used new structural elements in his anthropomorphic motifs (Organisms, Cells). His drawings and prints of female nudes are highly acclaimed. This watercolor is from the collection of Dr. J. Borovička 159/46. Stamp on back: “KABINET MODERNÍHO UMĚNÍ / Dr. J. Borovička, Praha”. Artist's inscription on back: Exhibited in Prague Sep 1945.
