Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: “G. Musatov”.
An impressive painting of gentle, almost dreamlike color dating from the 1920s is influenced by Naïve art, Primitivism and Russian folk art. Born in Russia, Grigorij Musatov was part of the wave of immigrants who came to Czechoslovakia in 1920. Thanks to a recommendation from his friend, Jan Zrzavý, he quickly joined the Czech art scene and became a member of Umělecká Beseda, regularly exhibiting with the art association. In the 1930s his style primarily shifted towards Impressionism; his paintings were loose and dreamy, corresponding to idyllic landscapes and poetic figures.
