Oil on canvas and cardboard. Signed lower right: “Kamil Lhoták 78”. This composition with palms, from the collection of a major Czech collector living in Germany, is reminiscent of a typical subject for Lhotak. The background and red point in the lower center on the edge of the pathway add space to the painting, which features richly branched palms in dark blue and green tones applied with a thick brush. The result is the strongly expressive accent of a small painting resonating with the painter's long-standing love of botanical gardens, which started with childhood walks in the gardens on Na Slupi in Prague. An evocation of the artist's experiences, which remained vivid despite the passage of time (he returned to the subject repeatedly, e.g., 'In the Greenhouse', 1952, oil on canvas, 22 × 55 cm, National Gallery in Prague). The painting is listed in the catalogue raisonné of Kamil Lhoták, no. 1864.
