Josef Král studied at the academy with Julius Mařák and later with Rudolf von Ottenfeld. He received a travel grant and painted in Germany and France. On his travels, he mainly painted environments with shipping and railways, but at home he painted pleasant atmospheric landscapes with village houses, rivers and trees in the evening light. The willows lining the stream are such an example. It is the trees in his landscapes that are painted with absolute precision and are often the supporting elements of the atmosphere of the seasons.
