Jiří Horník was a Czech figurative painter who, in the years of the creation of the present work, completed a scholarship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, an important study stay for his work. He subsequently painted in Paris, Brittany, Normandy and Corsica. In 1948 he exhibited at the international student exhibition at the Maison Monaco in Paris. After his return to Bohemia, his works showed a clear inclination towards French modern painting, especially Fauvism. In addition to landscapes, his refined handwriting was inherited by the industrial themes of the socialist period, which, while reflecting the working-class environment, conferred on them a lively and modern, uninhibited character.
