The mannerist still life centered around the developed thistle represents a rich mixture of fauna and flora corresponding to the style of Otto Marse us van Schrieck. The drama of the darkened composition hidden near the stump is pleasantly accentuated by the flying white and blue butterflies and the distinctly red tones of mushrooms and finch sitting in the foreground. A dynamic element in the center of the composition is a snake ready to hunt.
