This view of Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in around 1800 is by landscape painter and engraver Laurenz Janscha, a former student of Franz Edmund Weirotter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1806 he himself started to teach landscape drawing at the Academy. He primarily created landscapes of the area around Vienna and other areas in the Austrian monarchy. He rarely painted with oils, and the primary focus of his work was on watercolor vedute. He created the Panorama of Vienna; Janscha's works have often been used as the basis for prints by other artists, including Karel Postl and Johann Ziegler. Janscha also occasionally created prints and etchings.
