Václav Březina was one of the most important students of Julius Mařák, whom he had met while studying under Professor Kautsky in Vienna. In 1887, when Mařák started to teach landscape painting at the Prague Academy, Březina registered to study under him and remained a student until 1892. The strong influence of his professor's style is evident in the selection of subjects and the brushwork. Romantic forest still lifes and views of brooks, moors and meadows appear frequently, transitioning depending on the season and light. The similarity to Mařák's landscape paintings are also evident in the landscape of Lázně Bělohrad, a town with which Březina was intimately familiar. The painting likely depicts the nearby Javorka brook. Due to Březina's early death – he died aged 44 – his landscapes rarely appear on the art market. Oil on paper, mounted on cardboard. Signed and dated "V. Březina, Bělohrad 1900" on bottom right.
