Josef Vylet'ál first studied architecture with Jan Koula at the Technical University in Bratislava, but after three years he moved to Prague to the Academy of Arts and Crafts to Josef Hoffmeister's studio. Later he worked as a scenic designer at the Theatre Na zábradlí and as a designer he collaborated with film, especially with directors Jan Němec and Juraj Herz. His film posters gained worldwide fame and awards. His most important work as a painter is the monumental mural in the colonnade in Mariánské Lázně, which he created between 1978 and 1980. The list of his solo and collective exhibitions is extremely extensive and includes international exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
Josef Vylet's painting reflects the hyper-realistic, illusionistic imagination of Salvador Dali, with whom he was personally acquainted and friends. He carried this tradition deep into the second half of the 20th century. The 1987 painting Breakfast in the Grass is a fanciful and ironic reflection on Gustave Courbet's famous and once controversial painting.
