Josef Jíra probably acquired a taste for expressive modes of expression during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Miloslav Holý. In addition, numerous foreign stays, which he made especially in the 1960s and which provided him with knowledge of contemporary international work, contributed to this. It is known that he made a considerable number of drawing records from these trips. The offered veduta of the port of La Rochelle with its ships can be included in this group. The chalk technique used ensures a painterly soft blurring of forms, while the expressiveness lies in the richness of the colours.
