Karel Souček is one of the most distinctive figures of the artistic generation who joined in the 1940s. After a difficult start in Kladno, he joined Group 42 with its program focused on the modern world and poetry of the city. In addition to numerous passages, however, he repeatedly returned to the literary character of Don Quixote, whom he portrayed in all sorts of situations. The dreamy twilight landscape with two riders may to some extent reflect the fact that his work did not confront socialist realism and Souček found himself in seclusion and to some extent identified himself with the role of a "windmill fighter".
