Josef Istler found his own painting language, where he used various symbols and imaginative groupings of elements to create drama. At the same time, he was not afraid to outline the themes of the horrors of war and the burden of human destiny. He rejected the descriptiveness of art and condensed his new order of things through the rhythm of his artistic language. He even applies the paint violently and in the same way it disrupts it and creates new layers. He moved from proven themes and contextual elements to abstraction. Josef Istler was significantly influenced by the meeting with Toyen and K. Teige and was a founding member of the Ra Group.
