Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696 - 1770) JOSEPH WITH THE CHRIST CHILD

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was born to a family of means and is considered a major Venetian Rococo fresco painter and colorist. His works appear only rarely on the Czech auction market. The gathering around St. Joseph and the Christ Child is painted in a dusky light from below, as is typical in the artist’s paintings. Figures surround the Christ Child, while St. Joseph turns slightly towards the cross, lifting his head in prayer.

The background the scenery is augmented by clouds and ancient columns, which Tiepolo often used to add depth to the scene.
