Collage, postcard, panel
Signed on reverse: “J. Kolar 87”. Stamp: “Jiri Kolár ateliér – 4121”
Kolár’s playful collage dates from a period when he was exchanging letters with a young French woman, Beatrice Bizot, who was hoping to become a journalist. They exchanged correspondence for a period of one year: she sent him a short letter every day, and he sent her a collage. Kolár’s work influenced Bizot so much, she decided to turn away from her original dream and she studied sculpture.
Kolár is highly acclaimed not only for his artwork, but also for his literary work. He has written many collections of poems and two plays. His experimentation with blending several arts into a single work led him to create a sort of diary of photographs, which he gradually used to create collages. They liberated him from the constricting medium of language, offering his “poems” a new dimension. The 100-year anniversary of the birth of Kolar in 2014 was marked by a number of retrospective exhibitions. The last of them, Grimace of the Century held at the National Gallery’s Kinsky Palace, closed in September.
