Paintings by this exceptional artist became fully appreciated only after his death and after the political reforms ushered in by the Velvet Revolution. In his work he contrasts himself in opposition to artistic stylization, harmonized contrasts and the aestheticization of means of expression. In it one finds the influences of Cubism, Constructivism, and Malevich's Suprematism, connected by intellectual adjustment and the rationalization of artistic expression. His architectural perception of space, as can be seen in this painting, is always present in his work as an expression of the duality of his inner world. Originally part of a major Prague collection, the painting was created in the latter half of the 1950s after a pause in his work following his graduation from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Typical for this period is a series of paintings dominated by an effort to construct shape using a limited color scale. These paintings are the basis for his later works, which tended towards geometric abstraction. Čestmír Kafka's oeuvre is represented in many public and private collections in the Czech Republic and abroad, including Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Prague City Gallery, National Gallery in Prague, Jacques Baruch Gallery in Chicago, and Weber & Weber in Turin.
