Preisler was one of the founders of Czech modern art. Mainly influenced by impressionism and Art Nouveau symbolism, he created his own unique style with exceptional symbolic elements. Typical themes in his art were modern man's feelings, dispossession, the desire to become one with nature, nostalgia and expectations, and he portrayed poetic metaphors of life at the time. His pastel study is probably a variation of the dreamy boy in the "Spring" triptych, which was exhibited at the third Mánes Union of Fine Artists exhibition in 1900. Housed in the original frame (by Jindřich Eck).
