Gustav Macoun was one of the painters whose desire to paint was evident from early childhood. After completing his primary education, he studied under Alois Kalvoda and Antonín Slavíček. Winter Landscape is one of his highly valued landscape records with a touch of impressionism. He painted mainly in the surroundings of Bohemian Paradise, Kamenice and the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. He also managed to capture some disappearing corners of old Prague. Although he proudly claimed Antonín Slavíček, he managed to find his own expression, which perfectly captured the play of light and colours of the Czech landscape without just blindly copying the master or adding artificial sentiment to the landscape.
