Karel Souček is one of the most distinctive figures of the artistic generation that emerged in the 1940s. After difficult beginnings in Kladno, he joined Group 42 with its programme focused on the modern world and the poetry of the city. As a resident of working-class Kladno from humble origins, he was directly captivated by big-city life, as symbolized by shop windows, arcades, passageways, cafeterias, cafés and hairdressers. He also painted intimate portraits of city dwellers, especially women in their solitary moments of contemplation or, for example, while fixing their hair in front of a mirror.
