Josef Jíra first studied at the jewelry vocational school in Turnov, but then moved to the AVU in Prague. He played a lot of sports, supported himself with promotional graphics and book illustrations. Jíra was a founding member of the M 57 group. The most significant influence on his work was expressionism, which he adapted to his own needs and projected into his landscape paintings. The rhythmic strokes with which he built the composition can only be described as visionary. In his view, the landscape is a strongly felt and spiritual place, strong emotions are hidden in the individual strokes that tied Josef Jíra to the given place. He is a master at portraying both pure romantic joy and tense internal conflict.
