Pen and ink, gouache on paper; (dimensions in frame). Signed lower left: “J. Šafařík/ Paris 1910”.
A fresh moment capturing the atmosphere of Paris, which could also be a study of period fashion, is a work by the highly talented and recently rediscovered painter Jan Šafařík. Šafařík earned acclaim in Bohemia with his paintings and postcards of quiet corners of Prague. After 1909 he settled in Paris, where he was able to gain a foothold among his artist competitors at the official Salons (1910-1914); this period is considered to be the most valuable in his career. In addition to street scenes, he was inspired by nightclubs, dance parties and the Bohemian lifestyle. A master of depicting the world around him, Šafařík was a magnificent landscape and figure artist.
