Pen and ink, watercolor and gouache on cardboard. Signed lower right: “Loukota 1899”.
This drawing of the atmosphere of the forest at night, depicting a male figure over a lit candle in the foreground and flashes of light in the background, is proof of Loukota's excellent drawing skills. The artist was an acclaimed portrait artist and one of the best figure painters of his time, known for masterfully portraying figures in movement. He executed several decorative paintings by Hynais, such as the allegorical mural on the Pantheon of the National Museum in Prague. Loukota painted everyday scenes from people's lives and from the city streets. A number of his studies and paintings were reproduced in the art journal Zlatá Praha, and he was a regular contributor to Meggendorfer Humoristische Blätter and Švandy Dudáka. In 1910 he replaced Bohumír Roubalík as a preparatory class instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
