This figure of a native Moroccan soldier brings together Pelc’s sources of inspiration, particularly Cubism and German Expressionism. Pelc painted the work during his involuntary stay in Morocco, where he arrived with Hoffmeister, Kopf and Diviš after having been interned in France. Insight into his Moroccan period was provided by the exhibition “Travelling Against His Will. Antonín Pelc in Morocco, Martinique and America (1940–1945),” which the Gallery of Fine Art in Cheb held in 2013 based on works from its own collections. A variation on the auctioned painting was exhibited here, but it was created later – in the United States in 1945. Works from this difficult period in the artist’s life are truly rare sights on the market. Tempera grassa on cardboard. Signed and dated “Pelc 41” on bottom right.
