The Prague-born painter who worked in Munich, Vienna, Dresden and Berlin, was considered an excellent portrait painter. He has painted the portraits of important figures such as Gustav Mahler, Albert Einstein, Henrik Ibsen, and T. G. Masaryk. The idea that this portrait may be of the actress Elisabeth Bergner, whose name and surname are listed on the obverse, seems unfounded due to the lack of similarity with the subject of the portrait. In any case, this is a fine, lyrical portrait by an artist whose works do not appear often on the art market. Pastel on paper. Signed "Orlik" on right.
