The larger (4.5 x 21 cm) and smaller (8 x 13.5 cm) bowls were made at the time when Luděk Havelka and Vincenc Makovský were involved in the founding of the School of Art in Zlín, where Makovský was the head of the department of shaping machines and tools (today industrial design). The vase is an example of extraordinary craftsmanship, which is also unique in the field of technological experiments in working with marble shaped into the thinnest possible form. The Bata School of Art and Industry in Zlín was intended to educate industrial artists, taking into account the model of the German Bauhaus movement. Luděk Havelka was a Czech sculptor. He studied at the UMPRUM in Prague (1927-1930) and at the AVU in Prague (1930-1935). In 1935 he studied in Florence as a scholarship student of the Italian government under Prof. Graziosi and Giuselli. In addition to sculpture, he also worked on medals.
