Ivan Ouhel's work is an essential part of the Czech art scene of recent decades. His dreamlike landscapes bordering between symbolism and expressionism classify his work as Czech lyrical abstraction. Ouhel goes under the surface of the landscape, his sight resting on the lower layers of the earth. Ivan Ouhel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1968–1974) under Professor Karel Soucek and he entered the art scene in the 1970s, but his work reached far beyond this generational scope. He has exhibited at home and abroad since 1975, exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and 1988. From 1988 he was a member of the art group 12/15 Better Late Than Never, since 1992 a member of Umelecká Beseda art group. A four-volume monograph of his work was published in 2009 and was nominated for "Best Graphic Initiative of the Year." His work is represented in many institutional and private art collections.
