This scene from circus life comes from one of the Matysek brothers, Oskar, as one can see on the back of the painting, where there is a sketch of other figures with the description “O. Matysek/ Paříž” (Paris). The two artists come from Moravia; Oskar’s somewhat more well-known brother Petr trained under Professor Bacher at the Academy in Vienna and took study trips to France, Italy and Germany. In the 1920s Oskar Matysek spent six years in France painting primarily landscapes, cityscapes and the busy streets of Paris. This touching snapshot of two children standing before a caravan likely dates from this period, its masterful and yet gently screened painting infused with French influences.
