Oil on canvas. Signed lower right “Jiřincová 48”.
Executed with painterly sensitivity, this melancholic depiction of the artist's favorite theme of young women stems from the mood of the late 1940s. Young women form the center of Jiřincová's work, appearing as a symbol of the human condition. In the painting “Seamstresses”, the frugal and Civilist subject of simple working women in soft, impressive colors seems give a fairy tale-like impression. Ludmila Jiřincová studied painting, ceramics and landscape painting. She created art prints, illustrations, animated films, bookplates, paintings, and stamp and poster designs. She illustrated about 360 books, particularly focusing on collections of poetry (including collections by Jaroslav Seifert). During her lifetime she made over 1,200 art prints. She often discovered new possibilities in printmaking techniques, such as lithography on asphalt. She also used the mezzotint technique, applying charcoal dust over the entire paper and rubbing it with synthetic rubber. Her oeuvre of bookplates is significant (over 480), featuring woodblocks, drypoint, etching and lithography. The subjects are predominantly young female portraits and nudes, natural elements, and motifs from her own illustrations. Her work is referred to as dreamlike, mysterious, and filled with nostalgia. She herself has said that she primarily tries to express “the truth of her feeling.” The painting is from the artist's family.
