Still-life motifs, lightly and dynamically executed bouquets, have been a favorite theme for the artist throughout his life. His sensory-based art aims towards simplified forms and colors that are often symbolic in nature. This painting is an excellent example of a mature work by the painter, a founder of the Seven in October art group. In his early works he used Expressionism to reflect his anti-war message, which he portrayed through humans and their tragic fates. His later work is more colorful and lighter, mainly Picasso-esque still-lifes. He also illustrated books. Besides painting, he was also a talented sculptor, focusing on female figures and natural forms.
