Josef Václav Schwarz is not only a perceptive observer able to reproduce visible phenomena, but also a lyricist whose total mastery of material is a means for conveying his inner experience and spiritual tension, for conveying his ideas. He experiments with form, testing the capacity of expressions while attempting to make do with minimal media. After studying at the stonemasonry school in Hořice and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Professor B. Kafka, the artist focused on statues, portraits and relief portraits, creating a number of memorial plaques for important historical figures. He exhibited at the 2nd Zlín Salon in 1937, and his work is represented in the holdings of the National Gallery in Prague.
