Joža Uprka is one of few Czech artists from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries who accented ethnographic topics in his work; his focus was on a region with which he was intimately familiar – Moravian Slovakia. This work shows a girl (probably from Hroznová Lhota) wearing a particular headscarf tying style – a topic that he and ethnographer František Kretz studied before 1910 until the 1920s. This collaboration resulted in two anthologies: “Vázání šátku” (Headscarf Tying, 1910) and “Šatky a šátky” (Dress and Scarves, 1918). Oil on wood, signed “JU” on bottom left. At the top right on the back is authentication of the painting with the artist’s signature and a collector’s wax seal.
