This rare early work by Ota Janeček dates from the time when he studied at the Prague School of Arts and Crafts (1941-1942), which he did not complete. Soon afterwards he became a member of the SVU Mánes. The still life with a finished cup and a book shows both a certain degree of loose expressiveness and nostalgic lyricism. Later, Ota Janeček stylistically switched to Cubism, where related still lifes of silent reading with a glass and possibly a pipe resonate again. The artist's path led from paintings of figures and still lifes, travel landscape paintings to non-figurative work that shows all the signs of abstraction. The work comes from the artist's studio.
