The sovereign painting depicting the unique Charles Bridge, with the help of strong layers of paint, evokes the fleeting beauty of the capital's everyday moments. Karel Holan was a Czech academic painter, graphic artist, illustrator and teacher. He studied drawing at private schools in V. Beneš and O. Nejedlý. In 1913 he began studying architecture at the Czech Technical University, but he did not complete his studies because he was drafted into the army during the First World War, where he was wounded. After his discharge from the army, in 1915, he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Prof. M. Pirner, K. Krattner and V. Bukovac.
