This print by Johan Theodor de Bry, based on a work by Flemish Mannerist artist Abraham Bloemaert, presents an ancient idea of a state of bliss that had occurred at some point in the past. This vision of the “golden age” primarily attracted Renaissance painters, including the Netherlands, which at that time had just entered an 80-year war of independence against Spain.

This projection of desire is depicted through scantly attired people of all age groups scattered across the untouched landscape, which, although uncultivated, does not seem to be unwelcoming.
