Josef Mařatka (1874 - 1937) MEMORY

This melancholy statue of a seated woman combined the beauty of the female body with the expression of unfulfilled desire, gazing into the distance with her hand clasped to her chest. Anna Masaryková describes the creation of the sculpture in her book Josef Mařatka, 1958:

"The natural pose of a seated gymnast captured his attention and inspired him to create a lyrical composition, which he soon completed in 1919. He called it Memory.”
