Signed lower right: “J. SIMA 56”.
This work, from a noted collection in Prague, is according to an assessment by PhDr. Rea Michalová, PhD: " ... an original, artistically extremely subtle and unusually soulful work by Josef Sima, one of few Czech artists who are inscribed in art history in an international context. This work, 'Untitled,' is an excellent testament to Sima's enrichment of the modern interpretation of landscape painting. It dates to the start of the second stage of his oeuvre (1950–1971), during which the artist created additional masterpieces marked by an unusual spiritual depth and entirely exceptional culture of painting. This work bears witness to the timeless, delicate yet strong nature of Sima's work. Here Sima divests himself of all references to physical reality and notionally distinguishable objects so he may 'delve' into the very center of the earth and return to the original condition of 'prima materia,' to the incipient chaos of matter before it began to organize and give rise to the first archetypes of shapes and indefinite rudiments of form. A specific, but as yet unnamed form takes shape from the emptiness of the infinite universe, from mysterious clouds with scattered bits of light pushing through. 'Untitled' is a fascinating depiction of the birth of material, eloquently attesting to the secret of the world and of human existence. The quiet, refined urgency the viewer encounters is most representative of Sima's contribution to modern art."
