Stone, wood, and occasionally metal are significant materials in Jaroslav Seifert's art. A dialogue with the material and investigation of its upper limits are also characteristic for his unique intimate abstract sculpture "Space," one of his early works. Several freely-placed shapes, in this case wood, equally stimulate our visual and tactile perception of the surface. The artist, one of the most important Czech sculptors of the latter half of the 20th century, attended the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he studied under Professor Bedřich Stefan (1952-58). In 1965 he received an award at the Biennale des Jeunes de Paris and in 1968 he was included in a contemporary Czechoslovak sculpture show at Musée Rodin in Paris. After moving to Liberec, he created important works in 1969: a Plague Column and the monumental Bell for Jan Palach in St. Margrethen. Due to his political opinions, it was made impossible for him to exhibit or even participate in international sculpture symposia to which he was repeatedly invited. Published in: Jiří Seifert - Sochy, North Bohemian Gallery of Fine Arts in Litoměřice, 1993.
