Originally trained as a house painter, Josef Jakší was later convinced by Julius Zeyer to take up the study of fine art – initially at Prague's School of Applied Arts, later at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1903-1904 he completed art residencies in Italy and Munich. An exhibiting artist since 1898, his works are included in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, Aleš South Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou, and Municipal Gallery and Museum in Vodňany. Jakší represents a type of regional figure painting that draws inspiration for subjects from the South Bohemian countryside.
