GIRL'S HEAD (WITH HOLLOW EYES)
23 x 17 x 18 cm (h x w x d)
Starting price
In this portrait, probably of the sculptor's daughter Alena, Otto Gutfreund builds on his earlier sculptures, such as his Mask with Hollow Eyes from 1919, which was influenced by his residence in Paris. But unlike the stylized Mask, this sculpture receives a realistic treatment, with gentle shaping of the girl's characteristic features. The space inside the eyes, which the ancient Etruscans would inlay with a different material, is left empty for the viewer's imagination. Otto Gutfreund, whose work enjoys unceasing interest among collectors, is one of the most important Czech sculptors of international stature. Reproduced in the catalogue Otto Gutfreund, National Gallery in Prague, 1994–1995, p. 146, and in the catalogue raisonné, p. 258.
