Czech-born Metzner was one of Vienna's significant exponents of Art Nouveau at the beginning of the 20th century and also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His most significant works are connected mostly with architecture. Among other things, he worked on the decoration of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. This Madonna is one of the author's later works.
