Konstantin Korovin is considered the first Russian impressionist. He first encountered this new, modern style through his professor at the Academy in Saint Petersburg, Vasily Polenov. He himself later made numerous visits to Paris, whose nighttime landscape filled with lights and strange contrasts inspired him to create a number of canvases featuring boulevards at night. This impressive painting stems from the period after 1923, when the artist settled in Paris permanently. The work comes from the collection of Josef Škvor, the director of Škoda Works during the interwar period. Oil on canvas, signed and dated on bottom left.
