Jaroslav Panuška, a leading Czech landscape artist and symbolist, fully adopted his teacher Julius Mařák’s sense of care towards depicting the beauty of nature, and his scenes are a faithful rendition of the moody Czech landscape. Winter Landscape with a Brook is a typical example of his work and offers a remarkably cleverly composed view of the quiet snow-covered winter countryside. The brook winding through the grove of leafless willows mirrors the surrounding scenery and the treetops allow only very little light to penetrate through to the inner scene, forming a mysterious atmosphere that is characteristic of Panuška’s oeuvre and can also be seen in his fondness for painting various fantastical beasts.
