This bronze sketch of a woman standing with a harp, perhaps a Muse, was created during the period when monumental sculptures were being executed for the Municipal House in Prague (in 1911–1913 Mařatka sculpted the larger-than-life statues Drama and Music). The sculpture reflects the artist’s strong emotional relationship to music. Josef Mařatka studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague under Professor Celda Klouček (1889–1892), moving on to Josef Václav Myslbek’s studio at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts in 1896.
