This relief is dedicated to the mythological theme of Pan Faun playing a flute, seducing beautiful, ethereal nymphs who fall for his songs and dance in synchronized movement with their veils. The composition gives the impression that the Faun is trying to leave the confines of the relief and take the nymphs with him. Olbram Zoubek is one of the most important Czech figurative sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. He lived and worked between Prague, where he had a studio, and Litomyšl. Humankind and the human body are central themes in his work, and his elongated bodies reflect archetypes of human existence. In his work he emphasizes the craftsmanship and timelessness of the art object.
