Signed lower right: “Ota Janecek 1979”. Label on reverse: Ota Janecek / catalogue no. 4066.
A versatile and talented painter, Ota Janecek grounded his work in both Czech tradition and the legacy of European modernism. Starting with his early inspiration from Cubism, lyrical figurism and French colorism, he turned his attention to creating his own unique style. In the 1960s he focused on natural elements, but also significantly on stylized motifs of human heads and imaginary portraits. These coarse works combine intentional and random imprints, gestures and flat structures, which as a result resonated with new approaches and expressions of contemporary developments. His lifelong work culminated in a large retrospective exhibition at the Manes in Prague in 1995. Ota Janecek's work can be found at the National Gallery in Prague, the Tate in London, the National Library of France in Paris, the MC Nay Institute in San Antonio, Texas, the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts in Japan, and the National Gallery of Wales.
