"The Holy Family" excellently presents one of the main positions in the work of self-taught artist Jaroslav Herbst: a syncretic religious subject joining the Nativity with the Crucifixion in a tempera painting. Jaroslav Herbst was born to a rural family in Dušník, Central Bohemia. He studied mechanical engineering and later civil engineering at a technical school in Prague; in 1912 he started painting as a self-taught artist. After World War I he returned to his family farm, where he farmed and painted completely isolated from the rest of the art world. Both "The Holy Family" and "Still Life with a Bouquet" are from the artist's successful exhibition in 1934. Exhibited at: Jaroslav Herbst, 26th Exhibition of Galerie Hugo Feigl, Prague, 1934 cat. no. 29 (5,000 Czechoslovak koruna).
