Although Jan Bauch underwent purely classical training under Emil Dítě, Vratislav Brunner and Max Švabinský, his oeuvre is anything but a reflection of the classic view of depicting the seen world. Over the course of time Bauch's work featured many different positions, but the subject area essentially remained the same. Women are one of his frequent subjects. This portrait of a young lady is eloquent proof of the artist's attempt at strongly expressive expression, which asserts itself in his work from the second half of the 1930s. Typical features are the rich contrasting colour, dramatic play of light and shadow, energetic brush strokes, and succinctness. He used similar color and dynamic painting techniques in his 1942 painting "Belveder". The provenance is a private collection, the owner of which obtained the painting directly from Bauch. Oil on canvas, signed and dated on top left. Artist's dedication on back.
