Konstantin Korovin is considered the first Russian impressionist. He first encountered this new, modern style through his professor at the Academy in Saint Petersburg, Vasily Polenov. He himself later made numerous visits to Paris, where the nighttime landscape filled with lights and strange contrasts inspired him to create a number of canvases featuring Parisian boulevards at night. This small painting dates from the period when the author had permanently settled in Paris. Oil on wood, crack lengthwise, signed and dated "Konstant Korovin Paris" on left and "Konstantin Korovin 1933" in Cyrillic on the right.
