From the expert opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová, Ph.D.: "The assessed painting Still Life with a Jug and Grapes is an original, supremely poetic, sensually extraordinarily rich work by Jan Bauch, an author whose painting, unmistakable by its expressiveness and accentuated color, is an example and in many ways the embodiment of the struggle on the continuity of the values of the development of Czech modern art. It is a manifestation of a dynamic temperament sparked both by the view of inspiring reality and by the ideas of the creation of the greats of European culture. The assessed painting Still Life with a Pitcher and Grapes, which according to the full-page color reproduction in the 26th year of Free Directions (1929) was appreciated by both the author and the professional board of this magazine published by the Association of Fine Artists Mánes, is a beautiful example of how they synthetically connected contemporary tendencies of lyrical transformation of reality and also sounds of imaginative painting. The bearer of his artistic opinion became an expression whose building material is color. In this chamber-tuned canvas, the painter lets his sensual relationship to reality and the subtle feeling for its substantiation be heard. The magic of poetic color nuances is not an end in itself here: it is a prerequisite for the emotions and lyrical emotions evoked in the viewer."
