Bohumil Mareček continued the figurative work of leading Czech academics of the last quarter of the 19th century, from whom he received excellent painterly training. He studied under Emanuel Kresenc Liška, Felix Jenewein and Karel Vítězslav Mašek. He focused on girl nudes and portraiture, painting lovely Art Nouveau compositions in vivid and vibrant colors. Swimming by the pond is a representative example of the painter's work with color and light, where the warmth of the summer sun permeates the entire composition and brightens the yellow, azure and vegetal green tones, making the painting extraordinarily vivid.
