Černý's urban landscape belongs to the period when he was fascinated by France, where he returned regularly in 1946-49. Upon his return, he painted still lifes informed by Cubism and night landscapes capturing feelings of loneliness. An outstanding painter, in the 1940s praised by Jindřich Chalupecký as one of the most talented painters of his generation, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Prof. J. Obrovský. At the beginning of his career, Karel Černý was influenced primarily by Preisler's melancholy, resonating also with the artist's hard life experiences.
